上海视觉艺术学院原为复旦大学上海视觉艺术学院，经过近八年的建设和发展，2013年4月，经国家教育部批准，复旦大学上海视觉艺术学院从原来复旦大学下属二级独立学院，转设为独立设置的“上海视觉艺术学院”。为适应培养创新型、应用型艺术人才的需要，学校确立了“努力建设以创意为灵魂，以艺术教育与技术教育相融合为特色，面向文化产业发展和社会需求的应用型视觉艺术学院”的办学定位。坚持“人无我有、人有我新、人新我优、人优我精”的办学方针和“教育家治校、教授治学、学校自主、学生自理”的治校方针，确立了“原创性、艺术性、实践性、前瞻性”四性统一的办学理念，以及课程教学和实训工作室教学相结合，校内教学和校外实习相结合的办学思路。
