Yesterday’s Palm Trees Looked Like Fireworks

Yesterday’s Palm Trees Looked Like Fireworks is a collection of photography works created by Gao Yan who frequently traveled to Tokyo in recent two years. There are some styles different from the previous works, some "anti creation" characteristics. He tried to keep a balance that let the audience not be distracted immediately.
Photography is always an art for past moments, it perhaps the most superficial interpretation. Today, when we see all kinds of reports, entertainment programs, TV dramas, etc, broadcasted by TV stations at night, or browse the web to find those beloved things and appreciate the travel destinations of dreams, we are even more reluctant to move forward in the search. Images take the place of reality.
In Yesterday’s Palm Trees Looked Like Fireworks, the artist uses fireworks to replace people's life experience of time, memory and distance, or whether it stimulates the possibility of another experience. Remembering a personal moment with photography is becoming more and more public today. Everyone can share it with others, and imagine it as a personal experience trip. This is common in the consumer society. Jameson mentioned in his cultural turn that "image is commodity". To a certain extent, image has indeed triggered human commercial behavior. The era of "image fetishism" has come. If we study the mysteries of human life, those ideals and the results of reality are definitely different, and the ideal is the result of "image incitement" in the process of personal experience. This series of experience affects people's attitude in choosing the realistic road.
Yesterday’s Palm Trees Looked Like Fireworks made, or invented, a journey that didn't exist: it was a journey from the center of the city to the edge. We saw people who called, people who smoked, people who walked quickly, people who walked along the beach, people who were cheering on the sand dunes It is a metaphor for the refraction from image temperature to psychological temperature. In one trip after another, the artist confuses his personal experience in his creation, seeking, bewilderment, disappointment, surprise. Everyone has fantasies to look for a miracle life as brilliant as fireworks, but what they finally see may be just a tree, a palm tree that looks like fireworks.
