Speaking the Unspeakable

The project explores the past lost or left behind with the rapid development of China. Located on the east coast of China, seaweed houses were built by the plants growing in the ocean. The history of the seaweed houses could go as far back as the empire of Yuan, Ming and Qing. It is therefore representing the value of the Shandong peninsula in architecture, traditional beliefs, legends, festivals, and customs. However, according to the government investigation in 2012, more than eighty percent of seaweed houses have disappeared over the last two decades. Meantime, histories, stories, and memories of the seaweed houses are going to lose with the death of the old generations and the destruction of the seaweed houses. The project not only reflects the impact of urbanization on the countryside, but also investigates and embodies underappreciated historical sites and forgotten cultural traditions.
